India's First Fuel E85-Compatible Vehicles

India is taking significant steps toward cleaner and more sustainable transportation with the introduction of E85-compatible cars and motorcycles. E85 fuel contains 85 percent ethanol and 15 percent petrol, offering a greener alternative to conventional fossil fuels.

In a major development, automobile manufacturers have started introducing flex-fuel vehicles capable of operating on ethanol blends ranging from E20 to E85. Hero MotoCorp has launched flex-fuel versions of its popular Splendor+ and HF Deluxe motorcycles, while Maruti Suzuki has unveiled the country's first mass-market flex-fuel passenger car, the WagonR Flex Fuel. These vehicles are designed to automatically adapt to varying ethanol-petrol blends without requiring any changes from the user.

The initiative aligns with the Government of India's vision of reducing crude oil imports, lowering carbon emissions, and strengthening energy security. Ethanol, produced from agricultural resources such as sugarcane and maize, also creates additional income opportunities for farmers and supports rural development.

To support the growing adoption of flex-fuel vehicles, India is expanding its ethanol fuel infrastructure, with plans to establish thousands of ethanol dispensing stations across the country over the coming years.

As vehicle manufacturers, fuel providers, and policymakers work together, E85-compatible vehicles are expected to play a vital role in India's journey toward cleaner mobility and sustainable economic growth.
